Monthly Intelligence Report February 2024

This month’s issue of the Monthly Intelligence Report covers incidents that took place between January 1 - 31, 2024, in three focus regions:

  • West Africa

  • Western Indian Ocean (including the Persian Gulf)

  • South East Asia

Focus topic: Shipping traffic in the Red Sea and Houthi capabilities

This month, we are taking a look at the current situation in the Red Sea. While many vessels have been re-routed, maritime traffic is still flowing, albeit at a significantly reduced level. At the same time, most owners and operators are monitoring the situation closely to identify the best time for a return to the Red Sea. For the time being, however, there are several reasons for the Houthis to continue their current campaign which has already benefited them domestically as well as on the regional level.

In addition, the report provides a brief update on the maritime implications of the war in Ukraine.

This month's risk and threat assessment

In the report's assessment, the main incidents are put into a broader context to highlight current threat levels and potential changes for maritime operations. Moreover, the report includes forecasts that cover the main concerns in the coming weeks.
