Monthly Intelligence Report September 2024

The cover of the Monthly Intelligence Report for September 2024 features a headline in the centre, the Risk Intelligence logo on the upper side, and an image on top showing a cargo vessel in a port full of containers, waiting to be loaded.

This month’s issue of the Monthly Intelligence Report covers incidents that took place between August 1 - 31, 2024, in three focus regions:

  • West Africa

  • Western Indian Ocean (including the Persian Gulf)

  • South East Asia

Focus topic: Ongoing crisis in the Red Sea

This month, we are taking a look at the current situation in the Red Sea. The potential for a catastrophic oil spill from the crude oil tanker SOUNION has led to increased attention on the region, yet the overall situation remains unchanged. Extensive naval operations have not led to a lower threat level for commercial shipping. As a result, the amount of maritime traffic has remained virtually unchanged since January, languishing between 40 and 50 percent during the same timeframe last year.

In addition, the report provides a brief update on the maritime implications of the war in Ukraine.

This month's risk and threat assessment

In the report's assessment, the main incidents are put into a broader context to highlight current threat levels and potential changes for maritime operations. Moreover, the report includes forecasts that cover the main concerns in the coming weeks.
