RISK INTELLIGENCE TOTAL INCIDENTS 2022 Europe: 3040
Cargo Theft incidents and other threats of all kinds posed a continuous threat to European supply chains in 2022. Risk Intelligence have recorded over 3,000 incidents in Europe (including theft attempts) where we have been able to report what happened and provide an accurate location regarding where the crime took place. These incidents involve cargo theft or other threats to the supply chain, significant protests, terrorist attacks etc., and have all been logged on LandRisk Logistics with verified information, accurate location, images, incident analysis and supporting details.
European countries with most incidents recorded:
Germany: 1,161 incidents
United Kingdom: 574 incidents
France: 285 incidents
Spain: 260 incidents
Italy: 206 incidents
Note: The actual figures may be higher due to lack of reporting of cargo theft related incidents - and some countries are better at reporting incidents than others.
The most common types of incidents:
2,313 Thefts, including thefts from vehicles, truck trailers and facilities
284 Activism incidents
170 Violent Cargo Thefts
92 Law Enforcement Operations
53 incidents of illegal migrants found on trucks
Overnight thefts from non-secure parking areas on main logistics routes, industrial areas and other unsecure facilities in urban areas make up most of the incidents. Also, an increase of fuel siphoning incidents has taken place Europe-wide in response to increasing fuel prices.
The best defence logistics operators and manufacturers can employ to avoid instances of cargo theft is to use secure truck parking areas (particularly for overnight stops). When this is not possible, operators should employ TAPA TSR protocols to the extent possible to avoid being the ‘soft target’ when secure parking is not available on route.
